Builders Merchants Industry Forecast Report

The BMF has published the latest edition of its Builders Merchants Industry Forecast Report, which provides a detailed review of the builders merchants market in 2023.

Forecasts combine a comprehensive analysis of merchant market performance based on data from the Builders Merchants Building Index (BMBI), coupled with an analysis of the key factors affecting builders’ merchants’ sales to project future sales in 2024 and 2025.

Both volume and value sales through builders’ merchants have fallen during 2023. This is in line with the performance of the wider UK economy and the effects of this on the housing market, with rising prices and falling volumes. Volume sales dropped by -13.1% while prices rose by +12.9%.

The latest forecast reflects the continued economic uncertainty. The BMF forecasts negative growth for 2024, though sales are expected to build towards the end of the year.
